BREAKING NEWS: Cambodia’s Single Citizenship for Top Leaders Officially a Law

PHNOM PENH: After series of evaluations, plenary session and approval, the amendment of requiring single citizenship for the government’s top leaders is now officially a Law. The official promulgation was announced on Thursday after King Norodom Sihamoni’s final approval.

This will be implemented for the top leaders in the country such as the President of the Senate, the President of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister and the President of the Constitutional Council.

They should not have any other citizenship, only Khmer. Otherwise, they will be disqualified to be in the top position.

The law was initiated by Prime Minister Hun Sen in early October following the erroneous foreign reports stating that he holds a Cypriot passport. The report was later corrected by the British news agency, The Guardian.

In a Telegram message, former Prime Minister Hun Sen was eager to insert himself into the trip, saying, “Conveying my regards to people living in the United States and Canada who are welcoming the new prime minister instead of welcoming myself [like] last year.” </p><p>While some Cambodians living abroad have expressed excitement over the new prime minister’s visit, others are less enthused about the results of July’s elections and are openly speaking against them. </p><p>The former PM went on to note that his political opponents were wrong in saying he would never give up his position. </p><p>"I have said many times that ‘Today I am the prime minister and in the future, I will become the father of prime minister.’ The opposition groups disesteemed, yet now they might witness the truth that has happened,” he said. </p><p>He went on to write about how he has been promoted to father of prime minister for almost a month now, and that the “burden” of responsibility has been passed on to his son. </p><p>Prime Minister Hun Manet is leading a delegation of government officials to attend the UN General Assembly along with meeting UN officials and US businesspeople with the goal of affirming his legitimacy on the Western stage and increasing investment from abroad. </p><p><img src="https://eacnews.asia/uploads/images/25280/.jpg" style="width: 100%;"><br></p><p> </p><p> </p></article>
